Dungeons & Dragons is a storytelling game. One person, the Dungeon Master, describes the world. Everyone else plays a character in it, says what they want to do and rolls dice to see how it goes.
What you actually need
A set of seven polyhedral dice, a character sheet, and a copy of the rules at the table. Not every player needs their own rulebook, and new players are often given a pre-made character to start with.
Do I have to be a good actor?
No. Plenty of players just describe what their character does in plain language. Funny voices are optional.
